I don't like taking out beautiful, healthy-looking teeth for any reason, but sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes to get the best result possible and the results that you want as an Orthodontic patient, I'm forced to take out teeth.
Learn the main reasons I take out teeth on orthodontic patients.
Overcrowding is probably the most common and well-known reason. When teeth are overcrowded, there is just nowhere for them to go. I don't like to take out teeth, so I will only take out teeth if necessary.
If you have ever been to a consult with me in Allen, TX, you'll know that if you are borderline needing extractions, I will first align the teeth and see how they look. I always like to know what the teeth will look like before deciding if we will need to extract or not.
I can show my patients videos and simulations, but nothing is as good as real life. That's why aligning the teeth first and then choosing to extract is what I prefer to do on most patients.
Protrusion is when your upper and lower teeth are sticking out too much. Most people don't like this but it can sometimes give you the appearance of a "full smile" which can be very attractive on some people. Some cultures like the more full look while others prefer the more vertical or retruded look.
Like I've said before and if you've met me you would know that I give you the options, educate my patients and then ultimately let you decide what you want your smile to look like.

The final reason I'll take out teeth for my orthodontic patients is to help with bite correction. Sometimes when your top teeth are sticking out too much, it gives you a better result to just take out some top teeth and bring those teeth back to meet up with the lower teeth.
The same goes for underbites. If your lower teeth are sticking out too much, you can sometimes take out a couple of lower teeth to give you a proper overbite.
I prefer not to take out teeth, but when I take them out on our Allen patients, it's because of 1. overcrowding, 2. to reduce protrusion, or 3. for bite correction.
