The cost of metal and clear braces can be such a huge range. I know you are clicking on this blog because you want me to tell you braces are going to cost you some fixed price! I want it to be that easy. It would make my life so much easier too!!

Let me first off start by saying clear braces will always cost more than metal braces. We charge $500 more for clear braces than metal braces at our Allen, TX Orthodontic location.

WHAT DETERMINES THE COST OF BRACES?

The cost of braces varies due to a couple factors.

1. LENGTH OF TREATMENT

If you need braces for 3 months vs 3 years your treatment cost is going to vary greatly. In general the longer you need braces the higher the cost. The downfall of needing braces for a shorter period of time (probably the only downfall!) is that the monthly costs may be more. If your treatment is only $1200 but you will only have braces for 3 months then your monthly costs can be high. We do not extend payment plans beyond the time frame of braces therefore if you need them for 3 months your payment plan can only extend up to 3 months.

2. ORTHODONTIC INSURANCE

Many people do not know this but insurance is basically a contract between the dentist, the insurance provider and patient. The dentist basically agrees with the insurance provider to provide a service for a set price. Some insurance carriers allow the dentist to charge more and some less.

Some insurance providers cover more of the braces than others. That is why when a patient comes in for orthodontic treatment and they have insurance the fees are nearly always set before the patient walks in the door. There is an agreement between the orthodontist and the insurance company that if we see Sally with Blue Cross Blue Shield we must only charge her x amount of money for orthodontics.

Some insurance companies will also provide the patient with $1000-$3500 of additional benefits. So if we agree we will charge the patient $5000 but the insurance company will pay $3000 out of that then the patient only owes $2000.

I don't want to go down a rabbit hole with insurance because if you have ever delt with any type of insurance you know there is a lot more to it but that's the gist of it.

3. ANY ADDITIONAL APPLIANCES

The last thing that determines the price of your orthodontic treatment is the need for orthodontic appliances. This includes expanders, herbst appliance, forsus appliance etc. These all add to the overall cost of your metal or clear braces treatment.
