There was so much buzz surrounding do it yourself orthodontics, and I love talking about this. It gives me a chance to tell the world what an orthodontist is and how we can make your smile better. There are many different ways to straighten teeth, but I want to talk to you today about smile direct club, candid or any of those do it yourself type orthodontics.
The basic idea is that you do not need to see a dentist or orthodontist move your teeth. You can go to a lovely office, or you can take the impressions by yourself at home. Once the impressions are taken, you receive clear aligners a few weeks later.
The concept is that you have a virtual doctor helping you through treatment, although you cannot communicate with them. You do not take radiographs or diagnostic features that most orthodontists will take.
The price is generally affordable, which is the most enticing part.
With most treatments, there will be some pros and cons. The biggest pro for smile direct club or candid is the cost. It is more affordable than most offices and can typically cost around $3000. You do not need to go into a dental office, and you can do it yourself at home.
The concept I love the most about DIY orthodontics is that they have an insane marketing budget. This excellent marketing budget is great for orthodontists because we see many more patients at our location in Allen, TX. After all, they have been introduced to clear aligners via ads from Smile Direct Club or candid. We also get a lot of patients that have been through their program and were not satisfied.
There are a lot of issues with Smile Direct Club or candid that can be very serious.
1. Starting orthodontic treatment without X-rays. Not having proper radiographs can be harmful because many people have bone loss, missing teeth, hidden teeth, cavities, etc. If you try to move teeth and do not see these issues, you can permanently lose teeth and cause severe problems.
2. Taking your impressions. I have been taken impressions since 2006, and I can honestly say it's still one of the hardest things we do. It's challenging to get a great impression, so I can't imagine how someone with no experience could come close to taking an okay impression. If your impression is not right, the trays won't fit, and the treatment will not work.
3. You don't ever see a dentist or an orthodontist. Not seeing an Orthodontist is probably the most concerning because if you do not see someone who can directly supervise you, it's possible to lose teeth, damaged teeth, and hurt your bite. An improper bite can lead to life to issues that may never be resolved.
People are often surprised by the lack of price difference between an orthodontist vs. Candid or Smile Direct Club. In Allen we are able to take insurance and use long payment plans to help make it more affordable for you. This allows us to have monthly payments as low as $150/month.
As I have mentioned in many YouTube videos, Invisalign or clear aligners will always be more expensive than braces. If you want a good affordable option try clear braces as great alternative to Invisalign.

DIY braces have become a big topic in the orthodontic community. I think it could be useful for minor cases, but the cons far outweigh the pros. The beauty of having Candid and Smile Direct Club marketing is that they bring such awareness to pretty smiles. This marketing makes my job so much easier as patients are aware that a beautiful smile is important, and I have to guide them to make the best decision for themselves.
