If you’ve noticed that your child’s teeth aren’t as straight as they could be, you’ll probably want them to receive traditional braces as soon as possible. But even though metal brackets and wires are usually thought of as a childhood treatment, even teens and older adults can still benefit from them. Contact us today to talk to our team about your options for traditional orthodontics in Allen, TX; if you or a member of your family is experiencing severe orthodontic problems, braces will most likely be the treatment that Dr. Nathan most highly recommends.
The three major components of braces are the brackets, the orthodontic wire, and the elastics. Each bracket will be attached to the front of a tooth, and the wire will be attached to them via the elastics (which are available in a variety of colors so that you can choose a look that fits your personality). When the wire is held in place, it will press on the teeth and slowly guide them towards a straighter, healthier alignment.
During a traditional treatment, regular progress appointments are needed every so often so that Dr. Nathan can tighten the wire as needed and confirm that the process is going as planned. Any unexpected developments should be addressed immediately. The exact amount of time to wear braces is different for everyone, with some needing them for over two years while others can complete the treatment after just six months.
Once your son or daughter reaches the age of seven, we invite you to call our dental office to set up an initial orthodontic consultation. At that point, Dr. Nathan can create an accurate assessment of their oral development that should tell us whether they might need traditional braces or another type of orthodontic treatment later in life. Depending on what we find, we may even provide you with various appliances that help ensure that the permanent teeth will erupt safely, correct bite misalignment, and make various other improvements. These procedures – known as Phase 1 Pediatric Orthodontics – will reduce the amount of time that traditional braces are needed in the future.
Once your teen has reached the age where they have most or all their permanent teeth but their jaws are still developing, it will be an ideal time for braces. After wearing braces, their oral health – as well as their confidence – will significantly improve. To help your teen customize their braces to reflect their personalities, Thrive Dental & Orthodontics has a wide variety of elastic colors available. Of course, in many cases they may be less than excited about receiving noticeable metal brackets, which is why Invisalign Teen is an option that you may want to consider at the beginning of the treatment.
Even if you never wore braces as a child or a teen, it’s not too late. About a fourth of today’s orthodontic patients are adults, and Dr. Nathan has helped many an older patient benefit from traditional orthodontics. Today’s braces aren’t as bulky and noticeable as they used to be; thanks to smaller brackets combined with white or gray elastics, we can keep your smile looking professional all throughout your treatment. We can also offer clear and ceramic braces as well as Invisalign® clear aligners for those especially worried about appearances.
