What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are meant to cover the surface of your teeth. They are made of a strong porcelain that can last a very long time. Dental crowns are extremely esthetic and feel great.
To get a dental crown typically takes a few weeks as they are specially made in dental labs by highly trained professionals. Crowns can sometimes look even better than the teeth they are replacing.
Why you may need a dental crown
Dental crowns may be needed for a variety of reasons. You may have received a root canal treatment and your dentist will recommend a dental crown over top of that root canal. The reason for this is that your tooth slightly weakens as they are doing the root canal therapy and therefore a crown is placed to strengthen the tooth.
You may also need a crown if you have a large cavity or had trauma to that tooth. If more than two thirds of your tooth is compromised a dentist will typically recommend a dental crown.
Dental crowns look extremely esthetic and feel similar to your natural teeth.
How to make your dental crown last
Dental crowns can last a very long time if you treat them with care. Make sure to brush and floss your dental crown the same way you would all of your other teeth. It’s a popular misconception that you do not need to brush and floss your dental crowns because they are “fake teeth.” This is not correct and if you do not take proper care of your crowns they could fracture or get recurrent cavities underneath the crowns.
Come in for your routine dental cleanings as well as do not eat extremely hard foods or use your teeth as “tools,” to open cans etc.
If you take proper care of your crowns they can last 10 years or longer!
