What is the difference between a family dentist and a cosmetic dentist? Should I go to a cosmetic dentist if I need crowns or veneers? Does a cosmetic dentist only do cosmetic work and not routine cleanings and fillings? These are a few common questions patients ask us if they are contemplating getting cosmetic dental work. Let me answer those questions now.
A cosmetic is a dentist who decides they want to do more cosmetic work than general dentistry. Yes, that's it! There is no special designation, classes, or extra homework assignments they need to do to become a cosmetic dentist.
There is no specialty course like orthodontics, endodontist, oral surgeon, or periodontist. It is just a dentist who would instead do cosmetic work than the regular cleanings and fillings.
I don't love this question because there is no clear cut answer. There are some "cosmetic dentists" who are amazing but also others that aren't. There are some "family dentists" who are unique and some that are not.
I always recommend going to someone based on referrals. Suppose you know someone who has been to a dentist with excellent dental work, then why not try them out. If they have been to a cosmetic dentist and have a full mouth of crowns that look outstanding, try them out. If possible, try to see some before and afters and check out their google reviews.
My best advice is to go to a general dentist (remember we are all dentists) that you trust via referrals or google reviews. If it's an office, you enjoy then ask for some before and afters. I also believe it's essential to bring a picture of what you are looking for because that helps us out a ton!
As an orthodontist, I have been honest with patients and let them know there are individual dentists I think are better at dental veneers and crowns than other dentists. If you have ever been around me, you know I say it how it is, and if I think someone’s work is better, I'll tell you.
Hopefully, you can develop that rapport with your dentist or orthodontist to get an honest opinion out of them.
Remember, every dentist is a "family dentist," a "cosmetic dentist," and whatever dentist they want to be. Orthodontists, endodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons, and pediatric dentists are the only ones who have gone to school to officially specialize in a particular field.
To find someone to do your treatment go based on referrals and try to see some before and after pictures of that dentist’s work.
